Here are a few reasons why you may need Vitamins and Minerals in your diet
Poor Digestion. Even with regular food intake ,inefficient digestion can limit your body’s uptake of vitamins. Some of these causes are not chewing your food well enough and eating too fast.
Alcohol. Drinking too much Alcohol can damage the liver and pancreas, which are vital to the digestion and metabolism. It can also have a negative effect on absorption of nutrients.
Smoking. Smoking is also an irritant to the digestive tract and increases the need of vitamin c .
Laxatives. Overuse of laxatives can result in poor absorption of vitamins and minerals from food.Laxatives uses excessively can cause large losses of minerals.(Potassium,Sodium,Magnesium)
Fad Diets .Cutting out whole groups of foods can cause a serious lack of vitamin intake. Popular Low FAT diets can result in low levels of vitamin A,D and E. people who exclude all meat and animal foods must plan carefully to avoid Vitamin b12 deficiency.
Overcooking. Lengthy cooking or re heating Meat and Vegetables destroys heat susceptible vitamins such as the B group , C and E. Light steaming is preferable.
Food Processing . Freezing food containing Vitamin E can reduce its levels once defrosted.
Antibiotics. Some antibiotics ,although valuable in fighting infection , also fight off friendly bacteria which can be damaging when absorbing B group Vitamins.
Stress. Chemical, Physical and Emotional stress can increase the body’s requirements for Vitamins.
Pregnancy. Pregnancy creates higher than average demands for nutrients to ensure healthy growth of the baby and comfortable confinement for the mother.
Aging. The aged generally have a low intake of vitamins and minerals, particularly Iron,Calcium and Zinc.
Lack of Sunlight. People with minimal exposure to sunlight (Shift workers) can suffer from insufficient amounts of Vitamin D.
